Xiaomi brings Android 5.1 Lollipop to MIUI 7

At an event in Beijing, Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 7, the manufacturer's latest OS. Based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, MIUI 7 brings a host of UI changes, themes, features and a whole new way to receive calls.

MIUI 7 will feature five official themes, with a "Goddess" theme specifically tailored for women. As always you'll be able to choose from thousands of paid and free themes from the theme showcase. An interesting addition for the China variant is Mi Roaming app, which allows you to use a virtual SIM card of sorts when you travel. You'll be able to buy a data plan through Xiaomi when you leave your home country, allowing you to retain your SIM card on your travels. We'll be on the lookout to see if this feature makes its way to the global ROM as well.

In MIUI 7, you'll be able to set videos for contacts so that every time you get a call, the video starts playing instead of a ringtone. Another new feature is face recognition for the gallery, which lets you to categorize photos by people. You'll be able to set names and profiles for an individual, giving you a quick overview of all the photos that person is present in.

Xiaomi has also shared numbers, with MIUI now in use by over 150 million people around the world. MIUI 7 will be rolling out via an OTA update to the Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 2A, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi Note, and the Redmi Note starting tomorrow.
